Buhari Should Not Tamper With Press Freedom Again By Terfa Naswem

During Muhammadu Buhari’s military regime, he attempted to stifle criticism. Journalists were harassed, and many critics were arrested. The government of Buhari made no pretence of its intention to censor the media. In an interview with SUNDAY CONCORD, Buhari was explicit that he would tamper with freedom of the press. According to THE COMMUNICATOR (1985), he was reported to have been particularly irked by the role the press played in the N2.3 billion oil money controversy when he was the Minister of Petroleum Resources. Shortly after, his administration enacted the Public Officers Protection Against False Accusation Decree No.4, by 1984.

I’m proud of you, President Buhari tells Nigerian Media

President Muhammadu Buhari has saluted the Nigerian media for performing its duties diligently. The President, who made his position known on his Twitter handle, @MBuhari, on Sunday in London, said he was always in touch with news from home. President Buhari, whose picture was also posted in the tweet, specifically named Channels TV as one of his favorite Television stations. He said: “Wherever I am, I keep up with news from home. Channels TV is one of my favorites. I’m proud of what the Nigerian media are achieving.’’ The post has, therefore, dispelled the insinuation about the President’s health conditions.

The Presidential spokespersons on Saturday night in Abuja described as ”evil rumours” the social media reports on President Muhammadu Buhari’s health conditions. Meanwhile, many Nigerians have taken to twitter and Facebook to castigate the mischief makers. One of the post on Acebook said: “Godly for mouth, devilish at heart…how on earth could anyone use death as a mischief tool? It is only God the almighty that giveth life and HE alone has the power to taketh same life.” “For those spreading wicked and evil rumour about death of a soul, they should know that; they themselves don’t know when, where and in which circumstances they will perish. “They can wish PMB death thousand times and have fun; the same God that created them from drop of sperm to their miserable state is watching them. Long live Nigeria and good Nigerian people, long live PMB!” President Muhammadu Buhari left Abuja for the United Kingdom on Thursday on a short leave, which is part of his annual vacation. He is expected to resume work on Feb. 6, 2017.

Buhari in dilemma over running mate

All Progressives Cong-ress, APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is in a dilemma over the choice of a running mate for the forthcoming presidential contest. Buhari’s dilemma was said to have been accentuated by the rise in his ratings after the largely successful convention which has raised the prospects of a possible APC led Federal Government thus attracting many more interests into the choice of a running mate.

Basking in the euphoria of a largely successful nomination convention, party elders, hours after the convention Thursday night, went into a meeting in an undisclosed location in Victoria Island, Lagos with the issue top on the agenda. Buhari, it was learnt, was at the meeting but no conclusion was arrived at.

2015: Buhari upbeat about defeating Jonathan if INEC conducts credible election

Former Head of State and a frontrunner for the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential ticket, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has expressed confidence in defeating President Goodluck Jonathan in next year’s election if only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would make the election free and fair. He however added that his emergence would also depend on the choice of Nigerians.

The presidential aspirant, who also maintained that he is qualified to contest, spoke in an interview with Sunday Sun where he insisted that he had won past presidential elections he participated in and blamed his seeming defeats on the way the elections were conducted, saying he has been getting it right.

His words, “For example, look at what happened in the Supreme Court in 2007. There were three justices of the Supreme Court who presided over the appeal from the Court of Appeal. And the justices, three of them, said there should be another election because the election was not conducted according to law. Three justices said well, there were flaws in the election, but all the same, the ruling party has won. And then, the Chief Justice, decided to cast his vote with the three justices that said that yes, there were flaws, but all the same, the ruling party could have won. So, if the Supreme Court justices can be split, that means the election was controversial.

“We gave the evidence and the decision of the three justices that annulled the election arose from the facts. We collated them from the field and got them. That shows the contradiction with the Electoral Act. And that was why they annulled the election. The justices were led by retired Justice Oguntande; himself and the previous Chief Justice, Muktar, and one justice from Delta State,” he said.

Reacting to calls for him to step down for a much younger aspirant, Buhari referred to the Constitution and the Electoral Act which did not put an age limit for anybody seeking elective office even when they stipulated that such a person must be 18 years and above.

However, he jokingly told those insisting that he steps down for a younger person to go ahead and vote for whoever they consider to belong to the younger generation.
