“Evil” Jonathan a threat to democracy – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has blasted President Goodluck Jonathan’s “evil” plot to destroy Nigeria’s democracy through the deliberate denigration of rival political voices.

Obasanjo said Jonathan’s attempt at crushing the opposition is the worst crime any leader could commit in a democracy.

“Management of democracy without resorting to brute force and dictatorial tendencies must be cultivated,” he said.

“As a leader, you must not deliberately do evil or condone evil. You should know that you will one day give account to God, you may cover up here, but before God, there is no cover up.”

He said the “verbal violence” with which Jonathan is attacking his political adversaries could degenerate into a physical one if nothing is done to arrest it.

In sharp contrast to claims by the Presidency that the administration of Jonathan is the best since Nigeria’s independence, Obasanjo insisted Jonathan has failed Nigerians on the issue of security, economy, and in the fight against corruption.

“The economy is in doldrums, if not in reverse,” he said.

Obasanjo made the indicting comments at a book Launch in honour of the pioneer chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) Mustapha Akanbi‎, in Abuja, on Wednesday.

President Jonathan has come under heavy criticisms for the way the Nigerian police mounted a blockade against the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, who has refused to vacate his seat despite decamping from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nigeria’s Department of State Security Service (DSS) was also childed for invading APC’s data center in Lagos arresting 26 people and confiscating valuable drives, a server, and personal voters information in the process.
