Nigerians Must Be Allowed To Choose Their Leaders At Various Levels Of Governance - Akpabio

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwaibom state says the Nigerian people must be allowed to choose their leaders at various levels of governance.

Akpabio who said this in Abuja on Thursday insists that it is only when leaders emerge through the consensus of the electorate that representative democracy can thrive in the country.

In civil democratic societies across the world, leaders are chosen or elected into government positions by the people through the ballots or via consensus. Such leaders therefore derived their powers from the people and as such are accountable to them and responsible for their general well being. Akwa Ibom state governor Godwill Akpabio says this is why he has continued to insist that the electorate must always be allowed to choose their leaders at every level in the country.

He said, “The most important is the legacy in terms of succession, we handed over the state to God and said lets God’s will be done. The plethora of candidate that are coming out, let God bring out the best so that they can continue the uncommon transformation and maintain the legacies that we have created on the ground.”

The governor also noted that in order to ensure the preservation of past legacies especially development strides of a previous government, maintenance agencies be it private or public owned must be empowered to play key roles.

Akpabio aid, “We have a robust maintenance agencies that would be employing our children to do their best and train them in different skills to maintain what we have built on ground.”

The governor appealed to Nigerians particularly to the people of his state to play politics without bitterness as the 2015 elections approaches.
