Wike orders arrest of 15 mechanics polluting air by burning tyres, oil

The Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike, has on Friday, ordered the arrest of 15 mechanics caught polluting the air by burning used tyres and condemned engine oil.Governor Wike gave the order for the arrest while he was driving back from a funeral at Oyigbo. On getting to the area, Governor Wike saw thick black smoke oozing from the burning tyres as set by the mechanics.
Wike then directed the state fire service to put out the fire after he had gone into the workshop of the mechanics to condemn the act.Governor Wike however ordered their arrest for polluting the environment saying, he would ensure that the culprits are dealt with by the relevant authorities to serve as a deterrent to others.The Governor promised he would not allow the lives of the people be put to danger from environmental hazards such as from black sooth.He said to achieve this, his administration had set up and empowered a task force to curb black sooth pollution of the environment by mechanicsOthers who were with the Governor were the former Acting National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, the state PDP Chairman, Felix Obuah, and a former Rivers State Governor, Celestine Omehia.
