The United Action for Democracy, UAD, yesterday expressed displeasure
over the state of the nation, claiming that the living condition of Nigerians
has continued to degenerate.
The Coalition of Civil Society movement noted
that the rise in price of goods and services as well as the removal of all
subsidies have made life more difficult for Nigerians. Speaking at a media
briefing in Lagos, the Convener of UAD, Comrade Gabriel Ojumah said the 2017
budget was that of austerity that only allocates greedy subsidies, corruptive
allowances and bigger national cakes to its allies in governments. Ojumah
expressed disappointment towards the five percent allocation to education while
bogus money was allocated to sold or privatized sectors like Power, Works and
Housing.
The Ministry of Power has been sold to DISCOS and GENCOS that failed
to even put a kobo as investment in the sector other than just to collect fixed
charges and illegal 45 percent tariff increment.” In the ministry of works, no
road has been successfully completed for the past one year except that the
Minister wants to build toll gates everywhere.” Ojumah warned the Federal and
State government over disregarding the rule of law by using security agencies
to arrest and detain people and the illegal appointment of caretaker by State
Governors.
Security agencies now arrest and detain people without observing
the rule of law. Governors appoint illegal caretaker governments at the local
levels just to siphon the allocations. We also declared that all the Governors
must hands off the local governments now.” Continuing, the group issued a
two-month ultimatum to the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct
all local government elections across the country. “UAD gives all state INEC
two months to conduct all local government elections.”
