4 arrested for alleged murder of farmer over tubers of yam

Akure—Detectives in Ondo State police command have arrested four suspects for the alleged murder of a farmer, Lamidi Adeyeye, over the theft of 10 tubers of yam at Idoani area of the state.

The deceased was reportedly matcheted to death in his farm after he met one of his killers stealing his tubers of yam.Sources said that Lamidi on the ill-fated day, left his house at about 5am with his wife for the farm located at Odogbede, Ido-ani.They were said to have harvested ten tubers of yam before returning home to attend to family matters.Vanguard was informed by a family source that the deceased returned to the farm by 4pm with the intention of bringing home the harvested tubers of yam, only to meet one of the suspects, identified as Dayo, removing the tubers of yam.

The suspect was alleged to have removed six of the yams and was carrying the last four when the deceased caught him in the act.He was said to have struggled with the suspects but was overpowered. Vanguard gathered that he managed to escape from the grip of the suspect who didn’t want him to raise alarm.While he was running from the farm to the nearby village, Vanguard gathered that the suspect reportedly caught up with him, matcheted him to death and covered his corpse with leaves inside the farm.The wife, identified as Sherifatu, raised an alarm when the deceased failed to return home by 7pm and a search party was said to have been organized after a formal complaint was lodged at the police station.
Some detectives and hunters during their search reportedly discovered where he was buried inside the farm at about 12 midnight.Acting on a tip off, police detectives discovered the blood stained clothes of one of the suspects, identified as Dayo, when his room was searched.The suspect was said to have led the detectives to different locations in the state where three other suspects were arrested. They include Akanbi Adeboye, Baba Ejima and Olowo Johnson.The corpse of the deceased was later taken to Idoani Specialist hospital mortuary by the detectives.Contacted, the police spokesman in Ondo State, Wole Ogodo, confirmed the incident, saying investigation into the crime was continuing.
