South Africa Boss Mashaba Not Happy With Nigeria Draw

South Africa head coach Ephraim Mashaba was frustrated his side could not hold on to their lead after the 2-2 draw with Nigerian Wednesday's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo.

Sone Aluko scored twice as a substitute to claw back South Africa's two-goal lead, though the result was not good enough to send the reigning African champions into next year's finals.

In his post match reaction, Bafana Bafana boss Mashaba was pleased with his side's efforts but admitted he was disappointed not to hang on for a rare win against the Super Eagles.

"It's so unfortunate but that is football for you. It is a competition and everybody wants the points and it would have been good for us to have won the game ending the series with good number of points but unfortunately we didn't do that," Mashaba told a press conference.

"We lost the game in the last five minutes and we will go back and see what went wrong but on a more serious note, my boys did very well.

"The Nigerian side are a good team too because you can see their tactical awareness and their match intelligence but, unfortunately, my boys were able to stop them."

South Africa midfielder Letsholonyane was red-carded after collecting his second yellow of the night and Mashaba believes that affected his side's balance.

"The red card we got disorganised us because the moment that happened, we lost shape and that was what led us to crowding the area. Even at that, we should have taken the game to them," he added.

"We had two breaks and could have made it three goals against the Super Eagles but we were unlucky. Anyway, that is how the game goes."
